Ukraine: Now and Then

Dr Hubert Zawadzki was born in 1946 in Scotland to Polish parents who came to Britain with the Polish Armed Forces during the Second World War. He read modern history at Keble College and in 1973 he obtained a doctorate in Polish and Russian history at Wolfson College. He went on to teach history for 30 years at Abingdon School while continuing with his academic work– and he has continued this since his retirement from teaching in 2006. He a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a Member of the Polish Society of Arts and Sciences Abroad (London).

The aim of this illustrated talk is to present a manageable general survey of what is a large and complex subject. We will learn about the geography and people of the new state (independent since 1991), the Ukrainian language, religion and regionalism. Dr Zawadzki will talk about a broad historical survey…
