February message to members from Chairman Jane Probitts
“Perhaps like me you have a tendency to hibernate during the darker winter months, looking for any signs of longer days and those snowdrops in the garden that signal an invitation to get out and about. I have been looking at Oxfordshire WI’s plans for the year ahead and am pleased to see a wide range of things that might tempt us out of hibernation.
We have a couple of super events later this month with a Health & Wellbeing day at Didcot Civic Hall on the 24th, including tips on how to eat well, move well and hopefully live well. Just the thing to energise us again! At Benson Parish Hall on the 26th there will be a day with historical interest - the chance to hear about knitting for the troops and the story of Bill Pendell who was involved in the D-Day landings. Do phone the Tackley office if you are interested in either of these fascinating events.
To give you a taste of what’s to come, later in the year plans are being made for a literary lunch, a bread making demonstration, a photography workshop and - back by special request, there will be another craft technique taster day. Look out for a theatre trip and a music taster day along with several of the ever popular Speaker Selection Days, while if you feel like venturing further afield there are trips to Bristol Docks and SS Great Britain, the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham and a Christmas themed day out to Bath and Westonbirt Arboretum, plus a festive short break to Chatsworth. Plans are still to be finalised on a celebrity event – but too soon to say who. I’m hoping to be able to announce it at the Annual Meeting on 25 March. You’ll just have to be patient!
It’s always good to remember our heritage and I’m delighted that our new archivist
trio are enthusiastically making a start, reviewing what we hold at Tackley in the way of records, books, textiles and trophies to create an inventory. The team will also be working with the photos that many of you have sent us to create a full and current record of our WIs’ banners. If you’ve not yet sent us a photo of your WI’s banner we may be in touch with a reminder!
Here’s to longer days and the opportunities they provide.
