Chairman's letter - October 2023

I can’t believe that Autumn is here – we are lucky in this country with the change of seasons – keep that cardigan with you though just in case! I have been very fortunate to meet some wonderful WI members at various WI events – your love and enthusiasm for the WI is inspiring – thank you.

As we head into the end of this year, you may already have a new diary for 2024. Well, I am very pleased to announce a date for you to add to that shiny new diary. The OFWI Annual Meeting will take place on Tuesday 26 March. Following all the feedback from our members, I’m delighted to announce that we shall be returning to Worton Hall, Cassington. The Board are already working on finding engaging speakers and creating a great day, so watch out for more details in the November edition of Oxfordshire Inspires.

One thing I can share with you is the wonderful raffle prize of a quilt which has been kindly donated by Shipton under Wychwood WI to support the Oxfordshire Federation.

So how did the quilt come to life? Six members got together right after Covid when it was

possible to meet, even though it was socially distanced. The village became the meeting place for the Shipton Six and is where they combined their sewing skills to create this wonderful quilt. The pattern is Tribble Trouble.

SUW WI kindly funded the purchase of the fabrics and batting, and great fun was had by all. When Shipton learned that OFWI were struggling financially, the finished quilt was kindly donated. It is a great honour for Oxfordshire to have this wonderful donation. So, get buying those tickets in readiness for the draw at the Annual Meeting in March – date safely in that new diary! I know that time spent sewing not only produced a great quilt but provided the opportunity for this group to work together as a team during a strange time in our lives. I can’t understand though why my sewing skills were not needed – those of you who know me will appreciate that the WI didn’t let me in for those skills! There will be plenty of opportunity to purchase raffle tickets – watch this space.

As always – my love and best wishes.

The quilt is lovely and a real labour of love! We have a busy hands group which includes members from Wendlebury & Chesterton WI who have been busy sewing and crafting things throughout the year and selling items to keep our Wi financially afloat in these tough financial times. Lots of talented members!
