Chairman's Letter - March 2022

Updated: Mar 14, 2022

I’m determined not to talk about the weather, although ... , no … stop it!

Well, we are nearing the end of the WI Federation year (31 March to the uninitiated). Time for elections and reflections. I remember meeting my daughter for lunch and chit chat in a car park in Buckingham, a charming little town with a delightful walkway and stream adjacent to the car park, eating our lunch seated at opposite ends of the bench and surplus crusts going to the ducks. Passing strangers nodded and smiled to see us taking in the sunshine and pleasant surroundings. It was a time when we were prepared to hunker down for a few

weeks or even a month till this problem virus ran its course! Sometimes best not to know the future.

Well, the new word of course is “challenging” and by golly this past year or so has certainly been that. Few have passed through 2020 and 2021 unscathed. We have planned events and cancelled events; planned meetings at Tackley and cancelled meetings at Tackley; looked forward to meeting in person and had to cope with Zoom. ‘Unmute yourself’ is another little phrase which trips off the tongue. We have replaced one or two events which were way down the pipeline with alternatives in a scrabble to provide something our members could enjoy. I know we succeeded with our recent trip to Windsor when Bath Xmas market became a “no show”.

Not all doom and gloom then, and we are trundling onwards knowing we can soon be at opposite ends of the bench at the very least and feeding the ducks - figuratively speaking of course.

We have lost some of our long standing WIs, perhaps not for ever as public confidence grows. We look after any funds they left behind for three years, so they may have the opportunity to use this money for a fresh start. We want to look after you; we want to see you in person; we want to offer you a fresh start. Use your WI Adviser, she will be only too pleased to help out with advice and support. Together we will surmount all problems because the WI is important. Yes, a simple cup of tea with pals but so much more if you let it. Accept a nomination if it happens to help your own WI survive. Once a month, eleven times a year, it opens the window to so much more. Well, I don’t have to tell you that, cos you’re one of the stalwarts.

Signing out now cos it’s time to feed the ducks …
