Chairman's Letter - Dec '21/Jan '22

How Lucky We Are

Well, there’s no denying it now, the Festive Season is upon us! Time to gather together any aged relatives and sit them in the corner with a glass of sherry … oh no, this is the point when you realise YOU are the aged relative. However, as a child of what is now termed the Baby Boomer years, I sincerely hope I don’t fit that criteria. Sherry has become Prosecco, and no one is going to park me in the corner with my knitting! How lucky am I?

Think of the bonuses, you don’t have to worry whether you have “got enough in” and your store cupboard of goodies will encompass all requirements. Time was when we thought a Vegan was someone from Venezuela. Who was buying the crackers? No longer your responsibility. Time to sit back and rest on your laurels. Actually, perhaps it is time to reflect on how lucky we are.

If you are feeling low, look outwards and think of those who are far worse off than we could even begin to appreciate. We have all suffered times of stress and loss; if memories of what you have been through are threatening to overcome you, I urge you to think how lucky you are.

Years ago, in my family, mum and dad had a friend who joined our Christmas celebrations many times. As a bachelor, he enjoyed the opportunity to share in a family gathering. When forward planning was discussed, the regular phrase was … ”and Norman.” This followed us round for many years after his demise and now we giggle when we complete a sentence with ”and Norman.” It has become our mantra to ensure no one is left out. How lucky are they?

What’s this got to do with the WI you may ask? As usual I have gone off piste but, as I mentioned, this is possibly a time of reflection. I promise you, there is always someone worse off. Your gift could be a cheerful conversation with someone from your WI to whom you have hardly spoken before. If you manage to cheer them up, haven’t you also cheered yourself up too?

Don’t wait till we get back to “normal.” We are normal now, we are special. How lucky we are.
