My name’s Caroline Horton, I’m a writer and performer now living in Oxfordshire. Ten years ago I made a theatre show called ‘You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy’ about my eccentric French grandmother and her WW2 romance with my English grandfather. The show toured internationally for five years and was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2013.
During lockdown I returned to my grandmother's stories and letters and realised that after their marriage in 1945, Chrissy and Cyril lived in Bampton. As an outsider, she struggled with feelings of homesickness and isolation, and after having a baby her sense of isolation only increased. Now pregnant myself and living through lockdown in a small Oxfordshire village, I’m keen to explore this next chapter of Chrissy’s story. I’ve reunited with my original collaborators and we plan to gradually develop a sequel to the original show with the support of Chipping Norton Theatre.
I'm reaching out in case you can help. We’d love to hear from WI members about their memories of Oxfordshire (especially rural Oxfordshire) during the 1940s and 1950s to help us understand the world Chrissy found herself in. Even if these stories are secondhand - we are still very keen to hear from you.
