Frequently Asked Questions

How can I become a member?

We suggest you visit a number of WIs that you are able to get to and then decide which is right for you. All WIs are different so if the first you visit isn’t right for you don’t give up! To find a WI close to you click here or contact the office by phone or email (details are on the Contact Us page)

How much does it cost to join the WI?

Click here to find out more about becoming a member and the current subscription rates. Subscriptions are for a calendar year. If you join part way through a year you may be eligible for the pro-rata rate.

How do I find a WI?

To find a WI close to you click here or contact the office by phone or email (details are on the Contact Us page). Remember to visit a number of WIs. if you are still unsure about whether or not it is for you we can arrange for a WI Adviser to talk to you.

Do I have to pay to visit a WI?

That will depend on the WI. Some make a small charge for visitors and some may just ask for a donation. It is best to contact the WI before going to find out. They will also then know you are coming and make sure someone is there to welcome and look after you. The WI is a membership organisation and WIs usually allow you to visit three times before asking you to join.

What’s in it for me?

Where do we start! How about this list

  • It’s time for you away from home/work

  • An opportunity to get to know other women in your area

  • It’s educational, fun, inspiring, friendly, supportive ………

  • You can participate as much or as little as you like

  • You can get involved in campaigns, both locally and nationally (did you know the WI was behind the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, was one of the several organisations who founded the Fairtrade Foundation in 1992 and many more – click here to find out more)

  • Do you want to move out of your comfort zone? If so the WI will give you that opportunity! Learn new skills – it’s not all about baking or making jam!

  • Access to the members only website My WI where you will find lots of information about running your WI, campaigns, and an area covering food and cookery, crafts, floral art and gardening, sport and wellbeing, culture and science, shows and competitions and inspiring stories from members.

Can I come on my own?

Yes of course. If you don’t know anyone contact the WI before you go and they will make sure someone welcomes and looks after you. If you can’t get hold of anyone please call the office (details on the Contact Us page) and they will try to help.

I need a carer. Will they be able to come to the WI meeting?

Please click here to our our Guidelines relating to access of carers. We would also recommend contacting the WI you would like to visit to check accessibility.
